Famous Vietnamese actress sent to rehabilitation center for prostitutes
A famous Vietnamese actress and singer has been sent to a rehabilitation center for prostitutes after being accused of charging men up to US$1,000 (€800) for sex, officials and state-controlled media reported Friday.
Dinh Thoai Yen Vy, who has appeared in several Vietnamese movies and television shows, was sent to the Ho Chi Minh City center on Thursday, said a center official who identified herself only as Dung. City authorities have not determined how long Vy should stay, she added.
The official declined to give more details.
Prostitutes typically spend one to two years at the rehabilitation center, which is a locked, involuntary facility.
Friday's Ho Chi Minh City Law newspaper reported that police in April broke up a prostitution ring, arresting a dozen people. The ring leader confessed to police that she had brokered clients for Vy, who charged US$500 to US$1,000 (€400 to €800) per visit, it said.
Vy admitted her wrongdoing to authorities, the newspaper said.
Earlier this year, the actress was at the center of a high-profile scandal after a video of her having sex with her ex-boyfriend was posted on the Internet.
Vy threatened to sue her ex-boyfriend for recording the encounter and posting the video on the Internet without her approval.
Vietnam's ruling Communist Party considers prostitution a "social evil," and police have recently broken up several prostitution rings involving models.
There are some 40,000 prostitutes with police records in Vietnam.
